What Is ARRT Certification and How Do I Get It?

As radiologic technology careers continue to grow and the need for technicians follows suit, the applicant pool will become challenging. As a newly graduated or student sonographer, you should find a way to set yourself apart from your competition. ARRT certification is a great addition to your resume and career.

Everything You Need to Know About the ARRT

The ARRT or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is a credentialing organization recognizing qualified individuals in imaging and radiation therapy. Their main goal is to help individuals who work in medical imaging and radiation therapy to develop their careers. The ARRT has many credentialing options including:

  • Radiation therapy
  • Radiography
  • Sonography
  • Computed tomography
  • Nuclear medicine technology

Plus many more. ARRT certification and registration is often required by many employers. But, credentialing through the ARRT can help you stand out from the rest of job applicants, even if it isn’t a requirement. ARRT credentialing shows that you’re qualified to perform your role, meeting all professional standards.

How to Achieve ARRT Certification

How do you achieve ARRT certification? First and foremost, you’ll need to obtain an Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Technology or higher. Plus, you must complete an ARRT-approved educational program in the discipline as the credential you wish to certify for. For example, a sonography credential requires sonography education.

The ARRT has set forth additional requirements including an ethics requirement. According to the ARRT, “To become a candidate for certification and registration, you must demonstrate good moral character.” This includes filling out an ethics review pre-application.

The first step in the process is filling out the required ARRT application. After your application is processed, they’ll confirm that you’ve completed a registered program and will send you a status report with instructions for scheduling your ARRT examination. You’ll schedule and complete your exam, receiving your final score and approval in two-three weeks.
