What is IV Therapy Infusion?

Intravenous (IV) therapy infusion speeds the delivery of fluids and medications throughout a patient’s bloodstream. By delivering key medications and fluids directly into the bloodstream, IV therapy infusion helps to quickly manage a patient’s pain or life-threatening conditions.

IV therapy infusion is commonly used to treat a wide range of medical conditions, including post-operative pain, spinal cord injuries, fibromyalgia and more. IV therapy infusion treatments are administered either through a gravity feed or through a mechanical pump, though in the majority of US hospitals, clinics and outpatient centers, the pump method is preferred.

Curriculum

IV Fusion Therapy: 30 clock hours

Upon completion of this course, the motivated learner will validate competency and will be able to:

1. Define intravenous therapy
2. Describe indications for IV therapy
3. Communicate an overview of specific regulations and legal considerations of IV therapy
4. Explain fluid and electrolytes and acid-base balance as it applies to intravenous therapy
5. Identify grouping and classifications of IV drugs
6. Explain IV administration method
7. List measures to prevent medication errors
8. Demonstrate appropriate patient assessment prior to, during and post IV drug administration
9. Explain the circulatory system as it applies to IV therapy
10. Explain the selection process of peripheral veins appropriate for venipuncture and IV therapy
11. Demonstrate appropriate infection Control measures
12. Provide overview of short term and long term vascular access devices
13. Explain the equipment and supplies selection for venipuncture and IV therapy
14. Demonstrate an IV drip calculation
15. Explain how to institute a patient and caregiver education program
16. Explain IV catheter insertion and troubleshooting technique
17. Demonstrate skill in routine care and maintenance
18. Demonstrate central venous access device assessment
19. Identify nursing measures to prevent and manage potential complications related to intravenous therapy
20. List the documentation guidelines

Hands-on session includes demonstration PIV catheter insertion by the instructor and practice by the students.

Knowledge is assessed with a post test. Skill validation includes venipuncture and IV catheter insertion by attendees under supervision of a preceptor. Certificate of completion is awarded upon successful completion of the entire course.
