What Is a Data Management Degree?
All organizations in every industry use data to inform decisions, learn about their customers and so much more. However, lists of numbers and facts don’t mean anything at all. It’s the insights gathered from the data that give meaning. Data management professionals are responsible for wrangling, managing and making sense of company data for a wide range of purposes.
If you wish to join the data management field, there are some steps you’ll need to take. First, you’ll need in-depth training which you can receive by attending a data management program. There are two types of data management degrees: the Associate’s degree and the Bachelor’s degree.
Associate of Science in Data & Project Management
An Associate’s program is typically a two-year program that gives you the training required to obtain an entry-level position in data management. Programs may include both in-classroom and online study or they may be 100% online.
What You’ll Study
During your program, you’ll study a wide range of subjects and take many unique courses, including:
- Introduction to Information Technology
- Computer Hardware Fundamentals
- Data Foundations and Applications
- Introduction to Data Science, Analytics, Wrangling and Visualization
After your program, you’ll be able to understand, analyze, wrangle and visualize data to pull insights. You’ll also be able to create databases and maintain them on behalf of your organization.
Bachelor of Science in Data Management & Analytics
A Bachelor’s program typically takes two years to complete once you obtain your Associate’s degree or four years total. This program is a deep dive into data and analytics, giving you the knowledge you need for more advanced career paths.
What You’ll Study
During your program, you’ll study many data-specific and technical concepts. Some of the courses you’ll take include:
- Data Science
- Data Mining & Analytics
- Structured Query Language
- Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Data Visualization
- Database Server Administration
After your program, you’ll be able to set up database environments, acquire data, visualize data and analyze it for different audiences. You’ll also play a critical role in reaching organizational goals.
