What Is the Role of Data Management?

One of the most important assets a business has at its disposal is data. This includes everything from customer data to patient data and beyond. Data helps organizations understand what they’re doing well and what they can improve to reach business goals. And to make the most of their data, these organizations require data management professionals.

What Is Data Management?

Data management is an in-depth process that includes the wrangling, managing, analyzing and storing of data. For example, data managers spend time creating databases, separating data, gleaning insights from available data and visualizing data in a simple way.

Data management also includes other components such as data security and governance, which ensures data is kept secure, accessible and accurate.

Why Is Data Management So Important?

Data unlocks the secrets just beyond the surface of a business. However, it’s difficult (if not impossible) to make sense of the vast amounts of data generated each day without proper management.

Data management increases the reliability of the data so that businesses can trust it when making critical decisions. It also ensures any process using data is consistent and repeatable to eliminate costly duplicate processes.

Data management is also critical for the security of proprietary information. Data managers spend a lot of their time ensuring databases are secure and processes are in place to recover lost data in the event of a breach or loss.

How to Become a Data Manager

If a career in data management is what you’re searching for, there are a few steps you’ll need to take to get there. To start, you’ll need to obtain your high school diploma. Next, you’ll need to attend an accredited Data Management program such as the one offered through Cambridge.

We offer two programs: the Associate of Science in Data and Project Management and the Bachelor of Science in Data Management and Analytics. The one you choose depends on your career goals.

For entry-level data science positions, you can start with your Associate’s degree. Yet, if you wish to find a management-level position, you may want to obtain your Bachelor’s degree.

After you finish your program, you can then obtain industry certifications such as Associate Certified Analytics Professional. Finally, you’ll be ready to enter the field.
