How Much Does an X-Ray Technician Make

Is an X-Ray Technician a Good Career?

Interested in x-ray? Cambridge College of Healthcare & Technology’s Radiologic Technology program prepares you for a career as an x-ray tech. But before you decide to commit to the program, you’re probably wondering how much you can make in this field.

Radiologic Technician (X-Ray Tech) Pay

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for radiologic technologists in 2020 was $61,900. The median wage is the wage where half the workers in a job earn less than that amount and half earn more.

The lower end of the pay range in 2020 was closer to $42,000. As you gain more experience, you’ll make more. The highest-earning 10% of radiologic techs earned nearly $93,000 in 2020.

The facility where you work as a radiologic tech/x-ray tech affects your earnings as well. The BLS says these were the median wages for radiologic techs in different workplaces in 2020:

  • Federal government: $69,960
  • Outpatient care centers: $66,780
  • State, local and private hospitals: $62,850
  • Medical and diagnostic labs: $61,410
  • Physicians’ offices: $56,340

Are X-Ray Techs in Demand in the Job Market?

The BLS says that between 2020 and 2030, the employment of radiologic technologists is expected to grow 9%. That is about the same rate of growth expected in most occupations. As the American population ages, especially the Baby Boomer generation, there is likely to be an increase in the need for diagnostic imaging to diagnose cancer and many other diseases. X-ray techs will be needed to take these images.
