What to Expect After You Complete a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program

Want to become a sonographer? Not sure what steps you’ll need to take after you complete your Diagnostic Medical Sonography program? Let’s dive right in.

The First Next Step: Obtain Sonography Certification and Licensing

Most states, including Florida, do not require licensing to practice sonography. Yet, many employers prefer certification when looking for qualified applicants. Currently, two organizations offer sonography certification:

  • American Registration of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)

After you complete your sonography program, you’ll be eligible to sit for these exams. If you pass, you’ll receive your sonography certification and be ready for entry-level employment. Our program will teach you everything you need to know for certification success.

Deciding Whether to Specialize in an Area of Sonography

Some students decide to practice all areas of sonography, from cardiac sonography to obstetrics. Yet, it is possible to specialize in an area of sonography if you choose. To do so, you’ll need to move on to obtain a higher level of education, typically a bachelor’s degree or additional certificates.

Even if you decide to move forward, you are still eligible for entry-level employment after program completion. This means you can work while pursuing additional education, gaining real-world experience.

Finding an Entry-Level Sonographer Position in a Healthcare Facility

Many healthcare facilities are looking for qualified sonographers to fill open positions due to industry growth. This should simplify your search. First, you must decide where you’d like to work. Facilities such as hospitals, therapy centers, long-term care centers and clinics hire sonographers to round out their patient care teams.

Once you decide where you’d like to work, you can conduct a quick online search for available positions in your area. We recommend job boards such as Indeed, Monster and LinkedIn. You can also visit specific facility websites to see if they list current openings.
