Become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer With Cambridge

Cambridge’s Diagnostic Medical Sonographer program gives you the knowledge and hands-on training you need to become a successful sonographer also known as an ultrasound technician.

Our program takes approximately 90 weeks to complete, including a clinical externship at local healthcare facilities. This means you’ll be ready to start your career in around two years. After graduation, you’ll receive an Associate of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography degree.

What Is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?

A diagnostic medical sonographer or ultrasound technician is responsible for using imaging and testing equipment to examine parts of the body. This is to support doctors and other healthcare professionals in the process of diagnosing medical conditions and injuries.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (also called ultrasound technologists) play a key role in the delivery of patient care. Through the use of specialized equipment, technologists examine many parts of the body, such as the abdomen, male and female reproductive systems, breast, prostate, thyroid, obstetrics, heart and blood vessels.  Sonography is vital to the detection of heart disease, heart attacks, vascular diseases and more, and plays a major role in prenatal care for expecting mothers.

What Does a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Technologist Do?

Ultrasound Technicians are responsible for a wide range of duties, including:

What Does a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Do?

A sonographer’s main responsibility is to use ultrasound technology to capture images of the human body. For example, they may perform imaging of reproductive organs to diagnose pregnancy. Or, they may perform an echocardiogram to check the valves and chambers of the heart.

Ultrasound techs are also responsible for making patients feel comfortable during treatment and maintaining ultrasound equipment.

How Do I Become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?

To become a sonographer, you’ll need to obtain a high school diploma and then attend an accredited college or university program. After your program, you can become certified as an ultrasound technician. Although certification isn’t required, it can help you stand out from the crowd of applicants during your job search.

With a degree and optional certification, you’ll be eligible for entry-level employment in the field.
