What Education Is Needed for Cyber Security

As technology continues to boom across the globe, so does the need for cyber security professionals. These professionals work to protect computer networks from cybercriminals while supporting computer users. If cyber security sounds like the perfect career for you, there are some educational requirements you’ll need first.

First Step: Obtaining a Cyber Security Certificate

You have choices when it comes to deciding how you want to start your new career. The first method of obtaining the right education is by receiving your cyber security certification. Cambridge’s certification program takes approximately 60 weeks to complete.

During this time, you’ll learn the necessary skills required to start an entry-level career. Some of the subject matter may include:

  • Fundamentals of information technology
  • Digital forensics
  • Managing information security
  • Network and security foundations
  • Computer hardware fundamentals

Next Step: Moving Forward Toward Your Associate Degree

You can also choose to forgo the certification and instead obtain your Associate degree. Cambridge’s Associate of Science in Cyber and Network Security will take approximately 75 weeks to complete.

During this program, you’ll learn the same subject matter you’d learn during the certification program plus so much more, including:

  • Designing customized security solutions
  • Ethical hacking
  • Cyber defense and countermeasures
  • Legal aspects of healthcare
  • Managing web security

With each new level of education you complete, you’ll have access to better career opportunities. For example, while you may be able to obtain an entry-level job with a certification, you could obtain a higher-level position with a two-year degree.

Additional Certifications

Whether you choose to obtain your certification or move forward with your Associate degree, there are additional certifications you can achieve to boost your career. For example, you can obtain your CompTIA A+ certification, your Certified Incident Handler certification or your Certified Ethical Hacker certification.

After you join the workforce and begin your career, you’ll learn so much more on the job in real-world situations. Remember, no matter where you start, you can only go up from here.
