Medical Career in Less Than a Year in Miami

It’s a common misconception that students who wish to enter the medical field must attend a two-year or four-year program. While many career options do require this length of time, you have other options for entering the field faster. By becoming a medical assistant, you can start your new medical career in less than a year.

What Is a Medical Assistant?

Medical assistants support other healthcare professionals such as doctors and nurses in delivering patient care. You’ll often find medical assistants in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, outpatient medical facilities and physician’s offices.

What Does a Medical Assistant Do?

As a medical assistant, your day-to-day will differ depending on your responsibilities. You’ll more than likely have a mix of clinical duties and administrative duties, depending on where you work. Some of your clinical duties may include:

  • Taking and recording patient vitals
  • Explaining treatment or procedures to patients and their families
  • Prepping patients for exams and procedures
  • Performing laboratory testing
  • Administering medication or injections such as immunizations
  • Performing simple procedures such as removing sutures
  • Assisting patients with surgical aftercare

When you’re not supporting patients face-to-face, you’ll be supporting the full scope of patient care by finishing various administrative duties such as:

  • Updating patient medical records
  • Scheduling patient appointments and procedures
  • Answering and returning patient phone calls
  • Coding and billing insurance for payment
  • Working with outpatient facilities to coordinate patient care
Medical Assistant Job Outlook

Medical assistants are in high demand through Miami. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the medical assistant career is expected to grow by 19% between now and 2029, which is much faster than average growth. The growth may be attributed to the expansion of healthcare and the need for medical professionals to support our aging population.
