What Training Do You Need to Become a Medical Assistant?
To become a medical assistant, you’ll need to be able to carry out a wide range of responsibilities. Additionally, your responsibilities may change depending on the specialty you choose to work in. By completing a proper medical assistant program, you should walk away understanding how to:
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families
- Perform administrative tasks such as insurance claim processing and coding
- Maintain and update patient medical records
- Administer medications and injections
- Perform basic surgical procedures
- Draw blood and prepare bodily fluids for lab testing
- Prepare patients for surgical procedures and position them for imaging
- Instruct patients on proper surgical aftercare, health maintenance and diseases prevention
You’ll also need to have a certain number of hours of hands-on training using the equipment you’ll use each day on the job. Once you complete your medical assistant program, you’ll be eligible to obtain RMA, CMA or NCCT certification to help solidify your knowledge in the field. Then, you’ll be ready for entry-level employment.
