How Long Does It Take to Become a Patient Care Tech?

Patient care technician is with a patient

Patient care technicians are responsible for supporting doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in delivering patient care. As a patient care technician, you’ll spend your days monitoring patient conditions, performing everyday activities like escorting patients to x-rays and other diagnostic tests and so much more.

A career as a patient care technician is a rewarding one. You’ll truly get to make a difference in the lives of many patients each day. Plus, you can start your patient care technician career in under a year.

How to Become a Patient Care Technician

To become a patient care technician, there are a few steps you must take. First, you’ll need to obtain your high school diploma if you haven’t already done so. Your next step is to attend an accredited Patient Care Technician program such as the one offered here through Cambridge.

Our program only takes 36 weeks to complete from start to finish. This means you can start your new career in less than a year.

During your program, you’ll learn the skills required for career success. For example, you’ll learn how to monitor patient vital signs, how to perform venipunctures for lab testing and so much more. Some of the classes you’ll take during your program will include:

  • Home Health
  • Healthcare and Body Systems
  • Patient Care
  • Nursing Assisting

After you finish your program, you’ll have the option to take the Certified Patient Care Technician exam offered through the NHA for certification. While this certification isn’t required for employment, passing the exam is a great way to showcase your skills.

You also have the option to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam and the Florida Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam.
