Medical technologists, no matter where they work, often spend a lot of time on their feet in the process of collecting samples from patients and performing tests.
As far as work schedules, most medical lab technologists work full-time hours. Many jobs have typical daytime hours, but schedules can vary depending on your preferences and the needs of your employer.
Some facilities, such as hospitals, may need medical lab techs to be present around the clock, including weekends. This presents opportunities to work non-traditional hours if that’s what fits your lifestyle.
While medical lab technicians can work in many different settings, the job duties will be quite similar wherever you’re working. There are variations depending on your specific workplace, but in general, some of the tasks you can expect to perform include:
- Collecting and analyzing bodily fluids and tissue samples
- Recording your findings
- Operating sophisticated lab equipment
- Study and match blood samples for transfusions
- Entering data into patient medical records
- Discussing testing procedures and results with doctors
