Where Radiation Therapists Work

In Miami, there are many medical careers you can choose from. One of the most rewarding healthcare careers is that of the radiation therapist. These individuals spend their time delivering life-saving radiation therapy to those going through cancer. They are a key player in any cancer care team.

It’s a common misconception that radiation therapists only work in cancer care centers. However, these individuals work in other locations as well. Let’s take a look at the possibilities when becoming a radiation therapist.

Radiation Therapist Workplaces

Radiation therapists do work in outpatient cancer care facilities. However, they’re also often found in hospitals and doctor’s offices. Radiation therapists can also work in specialty centers. These facilities may specialize in specific forms of cancer or specific ages such as pediatrics.

Regardless of the workplace, radiation therapists often work a typical 40-hour workweek. In some cases, radiation therapists may work the day shift or night shift.

What Does a Radiation Therapist Do?

Radiation therapists perform a wide range of job duties, including administering radiation therapy to cancer patients. This process is done by positioning patients under a machine that delivers a beam of radiation to specific places in the body.

Beyond administering radiation, therapists also perform other duties such as:

  • Preparing and sterilizing radiation therapy rooms
  • Maintaining radiation safety standards
  • Monitoring and documenting radiation treatments
  • Supporting patients through radiation therapy
  • Supporting patient family members throughout treatment

Just like any other healthcare career, it’s possible that you’ll have other duties assigned to you depending on the needs of your employer. For example, you might be tasked with making appointments or reaching out to patients to discuss next steps.
