Should I Become a Medical Assistant or CNA in Palm Beach

Medical Assistant or CNA

If you’re thinking about becoming a medical assistant or a nursing assistant, you’re already doing something right—considering a career in the medical field. There are lots of opportunities for medical professionals in Palm Beach, and these careers let you earn good wages while helping people get the care they need.

Choosing the right job, whether that’s working as a medical assistant or a CNA, depends on what’s right for you.

Medical Assistants and CNAs: What’s the Difference?

There are several key differences between medical assistants and CNAs. Medical assistants work for doctors and play a vital role in helping them take care of patients. As a medical assistant, you might greet patients and get them ready to see the doctor, chart vital signs, explain procedures and collect laboratory specimens.

Unlike medical assistants, CNAs (often called nursing assistants or nursing aides) have a more physical job. They focus on providing direct patient care. That means handling tasks such as:

  • Moving immobile patients
  • Assisting with activities of daily living (like bathing and dressing)
  • Monitoring food input and fecal and urine output

CNAs work in many different settings, including nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

Because CNAs lift and move patients, they need to be up to be in good shape. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Nursing assistants and orderlies have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations.” So, as a CNA, you’ll want to pay close attention to the safety measures in place for providing great care.

Required education is different for medical assistants and CNAs. As a CNA, you can be ready for your career within weeks. You’ll need to study a bit longer to be a medical assistant, but the average salary is greater.
