Should I Become a Medical Assistant or CNA in Orlando

Medical Assistant or CNA

Going into the medical field is a good decision. There are many employment opportunities, and you get to dedicate your days to helping people. But there are also so many choices. How do you know which career path is right for you? And what’s the better fit—becoming a medical assistant or a CNA?

What a Medical Assistant Does

Medical assistants work under a physician’s supervision to complete a wide range of tasks, from greeting patients and preparing them for exams, to coding and billing, and charting vital signs. They work in doctor’s offices, medical clinics, outpatient facilities and hospitals.

What a CNA Does

Nursing assistants, sometimes called CNAs or nursing aides, focus more on providing nursing care to patients than on supporting doctors. As a CNA, you might answer call buttons, bathe patients and help them perform other activities of daily living. CNAs work in many different settings, including nursing homes and residential care facilities. You get to work directly with your patients and provide care.

Deciding Which Career Is Right for You

So, how do you know whether being a medical assistant or a CNA is a better fit for you? Get started by asking yourself some of these key questions:

  • Are you interested in making healthcare run smoothly? If you’re interested in the administrative side of healthcare, being a medical assistant might be a better fit for you. Medical assistants do well when they are well-organized and run on schedule.
  • Is caring for patients your favorite thing? If making connections with people is the thing that gives you energy, becoming a CNA could be a good fit for you. CNAs are often the ones who get to know their patients the best. That’s because they provide day-to-day care.
  • How much time do you have to devote to school? Medical assisting training takes longer to complete, differing from the CNA program that is completed in weeks. So, if you’d like to get started right away, the CNA program might be a better fit for you.
