During and After the DMS Program

A female DMS prfoessional is looking at a sonogram

Being a student is a big commitment, especially when pursuing a healthcare career. If you’re thinking of joining a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, you’ll want to know how to succeed both during and after the program. Here are some key pointers to help you get the best results.

Take Exams During the Program

At Cambridge, students are eligible to take their registry exams starting 60 days before graduation. This allows students to receive in-program preparation. Taking them while the content is fresh in your mind rather than after graduation maximizes your ability to do well on the exams.

Completing the exams also allows you to enter the workforce upon graduation. Taking your sonography exams will be an important part of your future employment success, as they exponentially increase your job opportunities. Let’s explore some of the exams you’ll take during your time at Cambridge.

SPI Exam

The Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination is taken after the third semester. It assesses your abilities and knowledge in clinical safety, physical principles and pulsed echo instrumentation.

Abdominal Exam

The Abdomen (AB) examination lets you earn a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential with an AB specialty. You’ll test your knowledge and skills in soft tissues, blood vessels and organs of the abdominal cavities.

OB/GYN Exam

The Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) examination gives you a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer credential with an OB/GYN specialty. It tests your knowledge, skills and abilities in the female reproductive system, as well as the fetus in the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

Echocardiography Exam

The Adult Echocardiography (AE) examination allows you to earn a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential with an AE specialty. It tests your knowledge and abilities in the areas of normal and abnormal cardiac anatomy, physiology, pathology and hemodynamics.

Stay Focused & Connect With School Community

Being a sonography student can be an intense experience. Staying determined and accessing your school’s community are important to your success in the program.

Make sure you stay disciplined with an organized schedule. Block out hours of time each week to study and prepare for class assignments, tests and registry exams. Beyond school, you may want to schedule your personal responsibilities as well.

Connect with classmates to form study groups or have an accountability partner. Visit your teachers during office hours and ask them your questions during class. Doing so will help you stay focused throughout the program.
