How Do I Become a Health Information Manager?

Health information managers work to ensure patient health records are accurate and up-to-date to improve care. It’s a rewarding healthcare career that’s in high demand across the country. Interested in becoming an HIM professional? There are some requirements you must meet to get there.

Complete a Health Information Management Degree Program

The first step is to obtain your high school diploma. Once you do, you’ll then need to complete a Health Information Management degree program. Typically, there are two paths you can take.

You can start by obtaining an Associate’s degree program in Healthcare Information Technology and then entering the field to gain work experience. Then, you can enter a Bachelor’s degree program. Or, you can simply attend a Bachelor’s degree program from the start.

An Associate of Science in Health Information Technology degree program will take approximately 75 weeks to complete. A Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management degree will take an additional 75 weeks after you complete your Associate’s degree.

For students who wish to enter the field quickly, an Associate’s degree is a solid choice. If you wish to further your education and enter management, moving forward to a Bachelor’s degree is also a great next step.

Required Courses You’ll Need to Take

During your degree program, you’ll take a variety of courses to gain the knowledge you need for success. These courses will differ depending on the degree you choose. For example, some of the courses in an Associate program include:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Health Data Content and Structure
  • Healthcare Delivery Systems
  • Pharmacology Essentials

A Bachelor’s degree program is more in-depth, so you can prepare for management roles. Some of the additional courses include:

  • Healthcare Finance
  • Health Information Management Organizational Leadership
  • Principles of Healthcare Compliance
  • Healthcare Research and Data Analyses

Cambridge’s Health Information Management courses have been carefully designed according to AHIMA standards. You can trust that you’ll graduate and start your career with confidence.

Become Certified as an HIM Professional Through AHIMA

Once you obtain your degree, you’ll then need to obtain Registered Health Information Technology (RHIT) certification through AHIMA. This certification shows that you understand the principles of health information management and are ready for entry-level employment in the field. Plus, it’s a fantastic certification to include on your resumé.
