Cambridge Advantage: Learning the Big 3 Modalities in DMS

A diagnostic medical sonographer is working on a patient

At Cambridge, our Diagnostic Medical Sonography program gives students the opportunity to explore three different modalities of ultrasounds. It’s one of the reasons our DMS program stands out from other programs in the country.

This diverse range of options allows students to choose a career that speaks to them, rather than limiting them to one career choice. Let’s discover the benefits of learning three different modalities in a DMS program.

What Are the Advantages of Learning 3 Modalities?

The Limits of Single Modality Programs

Nationwide, the majority of sonography and ultrasound technician programs only teach one modality of DMS. If you discover you don’t enjoy that specific specialty, you’ll be faced with a difficult choice: do a job you’re not passionate about or start over with a new program.

Of DMS students at Cambridge, over 95% start the DMS program to become OB/GYN sonographers. By the end, that percentage drops to 50%, often discovering that OB/GYN sonography is not their endgame.

Students changing their areas of study isn’t uncommon. In fact, about 30% of college students in Associate’s or Bachelor’s programs change their major, and almost 10% change their major more than once.

As students progress through a program, they either solidify their interest in an area of study or discover a more appealing interest. This is why curriculum diversity is so important, as it allows students the opportunity to explore their options and find their passion.

How Curriculum Diversity Sets You Up for Success

There are multiple benefits of studying three modalities in a DMS program. One benefit is allowing students to try out different specialties.

Students have time to discover which modality captivates them the most. They can also explore where they have a stronger skill set in a particular area. After learning three modalities, they can pursue whichever appeals to their interests without additional schooling.

Curriculum diversity also saves students time and money. Rerouting our career path can take a lot of time as we search for and reapply to other programs. A program that gives students the opportunity to learn three modalities eliminates the need to start over if a student doesn’t like a specific modality.

By giving students multiple options from the very beginning, students aren’t limited to a single option and instead are given the power of choice.

What Modalities of DMS Does Cambridge Teach?

Cambridge gives students the opportunity to study three different modalities in sonography:

  • OB/GYN: Obstetrics and gynecology sonography covers imaging of unborn fetuses. This includes gestational development, abnormalities, pregnancy complications, and estimated delivery dates. Besides pregnancy, you learn how to produce imaging of bladders, ovaries, fallopian tubes, uteruses and cervixes, and can identify conditions such as ovarian cysts or uterine bleeding.
  • Abdominal: You’ll learn how to produce images of the upper abdomen to help diagnose pain or enlargement. This includes imaging of the liver, pancreas, spleen and kidneys.
  • Echocardiography: In this modality, you’ll discover how to produce imaging of the heart. This includes the chambers, valves and vessels. As a result, you can help diagnose cardiovascular diseases.
