An Overview of the Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Exams

An Overview of the Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Exams

As a student in the Cambridge College of Healthcare & Technology MSN FNP program, you will receive many benefits that support your education. You will receive guidance and mentorship from your professors. Their real-world insight is invaluable as you plan your career as a Family Nurse Practitioner. The flexibility offered by the Cambridge online curriculum is rounded out with 765 supervised clinical hours that provide hands-on training in healthcare facilities.

Cambridge’s rigorous MSN FNP program is comprised of courses that align with the competencies required for either national certification exam, the ANCC (through American Nurses Credentialing Center) or the AANP (from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners). Certification exam preparation is offered by Cambridge to help you prepare to take and pass either national certification examination.

The FNP certification exam is a competency based, entry level test of your clinical knowledge across the life span of a family or individual. As a general rule, it is best to take this exam as close to graduation as possible while the material is still fresh. Prep, study and review, but go into your first exam ready and confident you will pass after the first try. Here is an overview of the ANCC and AANP.

They are similar in length. AANP has 150 questions and ANCC has 175 questions on the exam (some are future tests questions that don’t count towards the score). Both tests are taken online at a testing site. Pass rates and cost of the exams are comparable.

You can apply to take the exam before your official graduation date. You will need a certain number of credits completed to be able to apply for ATT (Authorization to Test). You’ll need to send your transcripts once you graduate.

Board certification lasts five years. Once you pass you are board certified for five years for either exam. The requirements to maintain certification are similar between the two organizations.

There are three main differences between the exams.  AANP is only for new graduate NPs seeking FNP or AGPNP certification. For other specialties you would have to take the ANCC. The question format is different between the tests. The AANP is multiple choice with one answer for each questions. ANCC has “select all that apply” type multiple choice questions. The third difference is the focus of the exam. The AANP focuses on clinical application and competency. The ANCC focuses on clinical competency and the professional role of a Nurse Practitioner.
