What Is the Next Level After Medical Assistant in Miami?

The Important Role Medical Assistants Play

Florida is in the top five states for the highest employment of medical assistants. And even if you’re thriving in your current career, there are tons of options to advance to the next level in the healthcare field.

But how do you know which path to take? Reflect on what skills you enjoy using as a medical assistant, and consider your salary goals before you start exploring. See what kind of education programs are offered in your area or if you can simply specialize.

To jumpstart your journey, we’ve put together some possible career paths to take you to the next level in healthcare.

Healthcare Career Advancements With an Associate’s Degree

There are two main career pathways you can take: people-facing and behind-the-scenes. In any healthcare career, you’ll have both, but certain professions have a heavy emphasis on one or the other. It’s best to think about which you prefer as a Medical Assistant so you can choose the right advancement for you.

People-Facing Careers

If you got into healthcare to help and assist people directly, a people-facing career might be best for you. These are careers where you get plenty of interaction with patients and medical staff.

Radiation Therapist

Being a radiation therapist is a balance of empathy and technical skill. You help treat patients by using machinery to shrink cancer and tumors.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

As a diagnostic medical sonographer, you get the best of both worlds. You’ll use special sonography equipment to create images of certain body parts, which supports doctors in making their diagnoses. And you also get to interact closely with patients and help them feel calm and safe.

Behind-the-Scenes Careers

If you enjoy the scientific and analytical side of being a medical assistant, a behind-the-scenes career will spark your interest. These careers are heavily focused on analyzing data, working machinery and examining the details.

Medical Laboratory Technician

Have your lab coat and goggles handy if you decide to become a medical laboratory technician. Here you’ll take medical samples and perform tests to help diagnose diseases and determine the best courses of treatment for a patient.

Radiologic Technologist

Radiologic technologists need to be detail-oriented and tech-savvy. You’ll be a specialist in x-ray and computed tomography (CT) imaging, and create images of internal organs, bones and tissues. As a radiologic technologist, you can even specialize in areas such as mammography and sonography.

Average Annual Salary in Florida for Healthcare Careers

The cost of living in Miami is 14% above the national average. If you are going to advance your healthcare career to the next level, you need to consider salary. If you’re going back to school, you’ll want to make sure the career advancement you’re choosing is worth it.
