What to Expect as a Radiation Therapist

As a radiation therapist, you’ll work side-by-side with radiation oncologists to administer medical treatment to patients with cancer. Each day, you’ll be responsible for a wide range of duties including, but not limited to:

  • Prepping and sterilizing radiation therapy rooms and equipment
  • Ensuring the correct use of radiation safety standards
  • Positioning and administering radiation therapy to patients
  • Documenting all therapy completed for each patient
  • Supporting patients throughout their treatment and care
  • Answering patient and family questions about treatment

As a radiation therapist, you may administer radiation therapy in a few different ways such as externally via external beams, internally via brachytherapy or systemically via IV. You’ll be responsible for both administering the treatment and keeping patients comfortable during therapy.

Where Do Radiation Therapists Work?

Radiation therapists can work in a variety of places including hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, outpatient centers, therapy centers, children’s hospitals, etc. With radiation therapy, you can choose where you wish to work, depending on the type of patient you wish to work with.

How Do You Become a Radiation Therapist in Miami?

First things first, you’ll need to obtain a high school diploma and choose a radiation therapy program such as the one offered through the Miami campus at Cambridge. Once you complete your program, you’ll be eligible to sit for the registration exam through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

In Florida, you’re also required to obtain state licensing for radiation therapy. Once complete, you’ll be eligible for employment.
