A Day in the Life of a Medical Assistant in Miami

A Day in the Life of a Miami Medical Assistant

There are plenty of career options for students interested in entering the medical field in Miami. A medical assistant career, for instance, allows you to play a critical role in patient care. As a medical assistant, you’ll spend each day working alongside medical professionals, completing a wide range of medical and clerical duties.

The Start of Your Workday as a Medical Assistant in Miami

After you grab your morning coffee, it’s off to work. As a medical assistant, you may work in many settings, including hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics, long-term care facilities and more.

Some facilities operate on a typical 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule. Others, such as hospitals, are open 24 hours a day. Depending on where you choose to work, you may find yourself working the dayshift or nightshift.

How many hours will you work? That depends as well. Many medical assistants work 8-hour shifts, while some will work 12-hour shifts.

At the beginning of your workday, you may start by reviewing your medical cases or patient appointments for the day. You may also return patient phone calls, answer patient messages or schedule appointments.

Taking Care of Your Patients

The bulk of your workday will consist of taking care of your patients. For example, if you work in a hospital, you may need to make rounds to take patient vitals or assist with medical treatments. If you work in a clinic, you may room patients, take their medical histories, give injections and more.

Some of a medical assistant’s other responsibilities may include:

  • Changing wound dressings
  • Performing minor surgical procedures
  • Obtaining urine and fluid samples
  • Updating patient records
  • Performing coding and billing insurance procedures

As you can see, the role of a medical assistant is dynamic. No matter how you spend your day, you’ll be playing a critical role in ensuring the facility delivers quality care from the office to the exam room.

Ending Your Workday as a Medical Assistant in Miami

At the end of your workday, you may enter patient information into their electronic medical record (EMR) and finish billing and coding procedures for the day. You may also take some time to look over your responsibilities for the next day to prepare.
