What to Expect After You Complete a Practical Nursing Program

Healthcare facilities across the US are working hard to fill nursing positions to keep up with an aging population. You can take advantage of the growth in this field by completing a Practical Nursing program. Once complete, there are only a few steps required to start your new career.

Taking the NCLEX-PN Licensing Exam for Certification

Your first step after completing your Practical Nursing program is to obtain licensing as a practical nurse. You will do so by taking and passing the NCLEX-PN exam, also known as the nursing boards. This exam determines if you have the knowledge and skills required to safely practice as an entry-level practical nurse.

Cambridge College of Healthcare & Technology has developed our Practical Nursing program to give you all the subject matter required for success. And once you pass your NCLEX-PN exam, you’ll be eligible for employment.

Finding Your First Job as a Licensed Practical Nurse

With your license in hand, you’re ready to find your first job as a licensed practical nurse. The good news is that many healthcare facilities hire LPNs frequently to meet growth demands in the industry. You can choose to work in hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, long-term care facilities, specialty clinics and other facilities.

If there’s a medical employer you’d love to work for, research their specific job openings first. Chances are, you might find a spot waiting for you.

What Will You Do as a Licensed Practical Nurse?

Practical nurses are some of the most flexible members of the patient care team. Each day, you’ll be involved in a wide range of duties. For example, you may provide basic nursing care such as wound dressings or educate patients on their future care. Other duties might include:

  • Gathering and presenting information to other medical professionals
  • Delivering and administering medications
  • Taking and recording vital signs
  • Evaluating the physical comfort of patients while in long-term care
  • Helping patients with eating and other daily tasks

You’ll also work with patient families and ensure they’re supported during difficult times. Nursing is a rewarding career, especially for those who simply want to make a difference in the lives of others.
