Everything You Need to Know to Become a Medical Assistant

If you’re interested in becoming a medical assistant, you’ve probably heard that it’s a rewarding career that you can be ready for in as little as 36 weeks. But how do you get started? Here’s what the path to becoming a certified medical assistant looks like.

Tour Campuses and Choose a Program

Many different schools throughout the United States offer medical assistant programs, so you’ll want to choose one that’s right for you. Start with a search for schools in your area (or the area where you’d like to live and work). It’s a good idea to look at more than one program. By comparing programs, you’ll get a good idea of which one is the best fit for you.

Ask questions like:

  • How many students who start your program complete it? And how long, on average, does it take them?
  • How many students find jobs in the field after completing your medical assistant program?
  • What’s the cost of the program? What do most students end up paying? And what types of financial assistance are available?
  • Can you recommend a few students who have completed the program who I can talk to?

Enroll in Your Medical Assistant Program

When it’s time to enroll, your advisor is a great resource. Different schools have different ways to apply, but at Cambridge, we make it easy. You can just apply for your medical assistant program online.

Complete Your Medical Assistant Program

During your course, you’ll get classroom instruction, plus hands-on training necessary to perform a wide range of clinical procedures. You’ll learn how to give shots, take EKGs, help with minor surgical procedures, draw blood and more.

Get Your Certification

When you’ve finished your courses, you’ll be able to sit for the RMA, CMA and NCCT national registry and certification exams. You’ll also be able to sit for the Phlebotomy and EKG NCCT exam if you’d like. Once you complete your certification, you will be able to start work as a Certified Medical Assistant.
