What Is a Practical Nurse and What Do They Do?
A practical nurse provides basic medical and nursing care to patients such as checking vital signs, inserting catheters and assisting with personal care such as bathing. They are able to report patient progress to physicians and discuss procedures and care with patients.
A practical nurse is the same thing as an LPN, which is short for Licensed Practical Nurse.
What Is the Difference Between a Practical Nurse and an RN?
Differing from an RN or registered nurse, practical nurses are not able to administer medication or perform diagnostic testing. RNs also require more education such as a two-year degree or three-year diploma.
LPNs work under the supervision of RNs and are not given the same level of responsibility that an RN typically receives.
How Much Does a Practical Nurse Make?
According to Payscale, practical nurses make an average salary of $19.06 per hour. This salary does not necessarily change with experience, with the most experienced earning only a bit more than the average. Pays range from $15.29 to $25.17 an hour, depending on location and type of care.
How Do You Become a Licensed Practical Nurse?
To become a Licensed Practical Nurse, you’ll need to attend an accredited college or university and earn a Diploma in Practical Nursing. Once you achieve this certification, you’re able to sit for the NCLEX-PN.
When you pass the exam, you’ll be given licensure as an entry-level LPN. It will take around a year to achieve LPN status depending on the results of your NCLEX-PN exam.
Is the Practical Nursing Program Hard?
The Practical Nursing program requires many subjects such as math, biology and anatomy that may be tedious. You’ll need to complete clinicals at nearby healthcare facilities, which require dedication. However, the Cambridge Institute of Allied Health and Technology is committed to providing you with everything you need to succeed within the program including hands-on experience and evening classes.
