If you answered any of these with a resounding “yes,” then ultrasound might be just the career for you. So, how do you become an ultrasound tech?

3 Steps to Becoming an Ultrasound Technician in Orlando

To become an ultrasound technician, ready to enter the field, you’ll need to complete the following three steps.

1. Obtain Your High School Diploma

You must have your high school diploma before you can enter a college or university program. Of course, you can also enter a college program with your GED.

2. Complete an Ultrasound Program

You do have a choice when it comes to ultrasound programs. For example, through Cambridge, our Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program takes approximately two years to complete. Once complete, you’ll have your Associate of Science Degree in Diagnostic Sonography.

During your ultrasound program, you’ll be required to complete hands-on training in the form of clinical rotations to practice what you’ve learned. You’ll also attend classroom instruction throughout your program. Some of the required curricula include:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Health Science
  • Medical Terminology
  • Sonographic Anatomy
  • Principles of Abdominal Sonography
  • Pharmacology
  • Echocardiographic Anatomy

At Cambridge in Orlando, our instructors provide personal and supportive classroom education to prepare students for practice. Plus, our externships provide students with the real-world experience they need to succeed in their ultrasound career.

3. Take the Certification Exam

Although certification for ultrasound is voluntary in most states, we recommend it for jumpstarting your career. After completing your ultrasound program, you’ll have the knowledge you need to take and pass the registration exam, offered through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

After completing your ultrasound program and obtaining certification, you’ll be eligible for employment in the field. Ultrasound technicians work in a wide range of settings including:

  • Emergency departments
  • Hospitals
  • Clinics
  • Doctor’s offices
  • Outpatient centers
  • Therapy centers
  • Surgical centers
  • Children’s hospitals and clinics
