Before you choose sonography, it’s important to note that there isn’t a quick way to enter the field. A sonography program will take you slightly over two years to fully complete.

Why Does Medical Sonography Take This Long?

Medical sonography is a discipline that requires a detailed study of the human body and its components. It requires hands-on learning as well as education about how the body works. You’ll need to understand how to:

  • Conduct diagnostic procedures
  • Manage sonography equipment
  • Analyze diagnostic images for quality
  • Report findings to medical providers for diagnostic purposes

During your program, you’ll need to complete various courses that include:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Sonographic anatomy
  • Principles of sonography
  • Echocardiography, OBGYN sonography, Vascular sonography
  • Medical terminology
  • Health sciences

You’ll need time to learn and understand these concepts before moving forward in the field. An education in sonography is something that you can’t rush. After all, the work you perform as a sonographer will directly impact the care provided to the patients you serve.

How to Become a Medical Sonographer

To become a medical sonographer, you’ll first need to obtain a high school diploma. The next step is to attend an accredited college or university to obtain an Associates of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography degree, such as the one offered here at Cambridge.

After successful completion of your program, you’ll be ready to enter the field. Only a few states require licensure beyond the degree. Make sure to check your state’s requirements.

Diagnostic medical sonographers have the opportunity to work in a wide range of facilities from hospitals to doctor’s clinics, long-term care facilities to outpatient care facilities and beyond. You can also work in a variety of specialties including pediatrics, orthopedics, emergency medicine, surgery and so much more.
