How Do I Become a Data Manager?

Data management is important for any organization ready to understand and use its data to make informed decisions. And effective data management requires skilled data managers, a booming career full of opportunities. If you’re interested in becoming a data manager, there are a few steps you’ll need to take.

Step #1: Choose a College Program

You’ll first need to obtain your high school diploma. Then, you’ll need to attend an accredited college program for data management. Here at Cambridge, we offer three programs in data management, including a Certificate in Data and Project Management, an Associate of Science in Data and Project Management and a Bachelor of Science in Data Management and Analytics.

Some students choose the Certificate program to enter the field quickly. Others choose the Associate’s degree path so they can enter the field in around two years with more in-depth knowledge.

Of course, for higher-level careers, you may opt for the Bachelor’s degree program. You can also obtain your Associate’s degree, gain some work experience and then obtain your Bachelor’s degree.

Step #2: Obtain Additional Certifications

After you complete your program, you have the opportunity to obtain additional certifications by passing exams to showcase your skills. At Cambridge, our programs prepare you for a wide range of certifications, including:

  • CompTIA A+ Hardware and Software
  • CompTIA Information Technology Fundamentals (ITF+)
  • Associate Certified Analytics Professional (aCAP)
  • Structured Query-Language Related

Step #3: Start Looking for a New Positions

With certifications and a degree in hand, you’re ready for employment. When it comes to data management, there are various positions available. For example, you could be a data analyst, a data engineer, a computer systems analyst, a database manager and more.

Do your research to see which positions fit your goals and interests. You should also decide where you would like to work. For example, do you want to work as a data manager in healthcare? Business? For non-profits?
