What Is a Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program?

Diagnostic medical sonographers use sonography equipment to take images of the human body. As a result, other medical professionals can diagnose and treat medical conditions, diseases and injuries. Sonographers are a critical part of any healthcare team.

To become a sonographer, you’ll need to attend an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program such as the one offered through Cambridge.

What to Expect During Your Miami Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program

During your sonography program, you’ll receive all of the instruction and hands-on training you need for success. Some of the coursework you’ll dive into will include:

  • Health science
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Medical terminology
  • Sonographic anatomy
  • Principles of sonography

You’ll learn how to conduct diagnostic procedures, manage ultrasound equipment, analyze diagnostic images and so much more.

You’ll also complete a clinical externship inside local healthcare facilities where you’ll get to use your newfound skills in real-world clinical environments. At the end of your program, which lasts approximately 90 weeks, you’ll walk away with an Associate of Science degree.

Cambridge Offers 3 Distinct Modalities in One Single Program

While most programs only offer two separate sonography tracks (general and echo), Cambridge delivers three tracks in one single program. You’ll learn general sonography which refers to the abdomen and OB/GYN as well as echocardiography. You’ll graduate as a full-body technician.

What Happens After Your DMS Program?

After you complete your DMS program, you can pursue certification as an ultrasound technician. Although it’s not typically required, it can help you stand out from the other applicants when searching for a new job.

After certification, you’ll be ready for entry-level employment. Cambridge can help you find a new position through our Career Services department. We offer job placement services to help students find open positions in local healthcare facilities.

Sonographers can choose from a wide range of healthcare facilities to work in. For example, sonographers are often found in hospitals, diagnostic imaging centers, long-term care facilities, doctor’s offices and beyond.

In your day-to-day, you’ll position patients for ultrasounds, take images, inform physicians of results and maintain your equipment. You may also schedule patient imaging appointments.
