What is a Nuclear Medicine Technologist?

Implementing imaging that involves unstable atoms that emit radiation to diagnose and treat diseases, Nuclear Medicine Technologists (NMTs) play an important role in patient care services and must be dedicated to learning a highly skilled trade that requires confidence and accuracy. Prior to the imaging process, NMTs inject or orally administer radioactive compounds to patients in order to track metabolic changes. There are two fields of specialization that an NMT can work within – nuclear cardiology and positron emission topography (commonly referred to as PET scans). Nuclear cardiology relies on patient exertion to monitor blood flow and the heart during the diagnostic process while PET scans create 3-D images of the body. These skills are learned through student-centered theological studies and vocational practices that feature state-of-the-art equipment that is comparable to what students will be faced with when working in their future careers.
